POST OP INSTRUCTIONS FOR 
STAPEDECTOMY

Taking Care of You

AFTER YOU OPERATION YOU WILL EXPERIENCE:

An earache (and the soreness can last for 7 – 10 days)

 

AFTER YOUR OPERATION YOU MAY EXPERIENCE:

A discharge/drainage from your ear (this is normal)

 

TAKE THE MEDICATIONS AS PRESCRIBED:

  • The prescribed pain killer should be used for at least the first 48 hours

  • Regular Tylenol or Advil can be used after the first 2 days

DO NOT REMOVE THE PACKING. Apply the drops directly onto the packing

 

KEEP THE EAR DRY:

  • Use a cotton ball coated in Vaseline to seal the ear while bathing or showering

  • Replace with a dry cotton ball afterwards

                       

If you do not have a follow up appointment please call the office 613-235-0469.

 

CALL THE OFFICE IF:

  • The pain in your ear gets worse instead of better

  • A fever develops

  • Swelling, redness, or a rash appears at the site of the surgery

  • You notice an odour arising from the site of the surgery

  • You develop dizziness or weakness in the muscles of the face

AVOID PHYSICAL EXERCISE FOR 2 WEEKS FOLLOWING YOUR OPERATION

 

AFTER HOURS ADVICE:

The office phone is not answered after regular office hours or on weekends. If you have questions or concerns that arise after office hours or on weekends, save them until the next business day. My staff and I will be happy to address any concerns you may have at that time.

 

IF YOU FEEL YOUR SITUATION IS URGENT, CALL THE OTTAWA HOSPITAL SWITCHBOARD @ 613 – 798-5555. INTRODUCE YOURSELF AS ONE OF MY PATIENTS AND ASK TO SPEAK WITH THE “E.N.T. DOCTOR ON CALL”.  BE PATIENT, YOU MAY HAVE TO WAIT BY THE PHONE UNTIL THE PHYSICIAN ON CALL DEALS WITH OTHER PATIENTS IN THE HOSPITAL BEFORE GETTING BACK TO YOU.
